You guys have all been so amazing! I am still in shock by the amount of support we are receiving. It feels really good. I would like to apologize for any downtime or lag you may have experienced over the past couple days. We have tried to keep it as minimal as possible and I think we are doing a great job. Our Staff has also been doing an amazing job at keeping our application response time as low as possible. Give them a hand. They do this all for the love of it so they deserve a big pat on the back every now and then.

Now, for the changes! We will be implementing a new rank tomorrow morning. [Engineer]! What's an Engineer you ask? Simple! It's a special rank players can apply for after playing on the server for at least 2 weeks (this will vary for some players depending on the level of dedication shown). Engineers will get access to certain items/abilities not available to the regular Citizen rank. These abilities are as follows:
    • Access to use Quarries/Fillers/Builders
    • Access to TNT
    • Access to Lava Buckets
    • Access to /kit engineer
As you can imagine, this means the Citizen rank will no longer have access to any of the above by default. Quarries already in progress will be able to continue, but once removed will not be able to be placed until you hit the proper rank.

Applying for the Engineer rank will be simple. We will have a new section of the forum specifically set up for this. (It's not created just yet) Engineers should be very experienced in using Tekkit and its collective mods. If you don't know how to set up a self-sufficient biomass farm, then you probably shouldn't be applying for Engineer yet! We also will value any Engineers input greatly when it comes to machine design. These players know what they are talking about! If they say your machine is overly complex and can be simplified, listen to them!

You may be wondering what the reasoning behind this is? Why are we restricting Quarry placement and such? The answer is simple. People are abusing the hell out of quarries. Running them constantly and tearing up the land with no real care is getting out of hand. I have seen quarries set up carelessly on top of mountains being defined by incredibly large landmark setups. Things that just don't make sense! Come on guys! We want the map to look at least semi-decent in 2 weeks! Limiting the use of these items will also increase our tick rate. You can't imagine how much it affects the server having so many quarries running at once. Which brings me to the next major change.

Chunk Loader Blocks are being completely removed! During the downtime in the morning we will be removing all chunk loader blocks from the map. No, picking them up and placing them in your inventory will not allow you to place them later. Placing chunk loaders will also be completely disabled. I checked our map earlier and we have over 200 chunk loader blocks currently placed. (And that's not counting the Nether!) This is dramatically slowing down the servers speed. Build your machines more efficiently so they can run with you nearby.

Water Strainers and Block Breakers are being removed and disabled! After investigating these blocks and looking into them I have determined the amount of server stress they apply is absolutely insane! They will be completely disabled and removed. This shouldn't affect too many builds.

We will be cracking down on anyone building large solar arrays! Use the LV, MV, HV Solar Array blocks! That's why they are there! This also helps with server stress.

New rules are being implemented to counter unnecessarily complex machines. Please don't build massive machine systems that have no purpose OR are just being built to make something marginally faster. We can't impose a direct limit on machines because systems vary, but we will leave it to staff and Engineers to decide if a machine is overly complex. As long as your machine has a defined purpose and is built efficiently then you will have no issues. This will be added to the rules. A good example of this is building 50 macerators and furnaces all working in unison. There is no reason for you to have something that large. Overclock two macerators or use rotary macerators! Remember, this is a multiplayer server! Everything you do effects other players experiences as well.

That's the major changes coming in a (large) nutshell. We hope all of the above changes make the experience on SGTekkit better for everyone!

In other news we are in the process of starting up the SGTekkit Wiki! All registered forum users will automatically be logged in and able to edit pages. Feel free to add pages and help with its creation. The more detail and guides the better!

That's it! Comments encouraged, of course!

    tl;dr
    • New rank being added: Engineer!
    • Chunk Loader Blocks being removed
    • Water Strainers/Block Breakers being removed
    • Use LV,MV,HV solar arrays!
    • Pneumatic tubes > Buildcraft Pipes
    • Do not build unnecessarily complex machines
    • We added a Wiki! (Which still needs a ton of work)

Excellent update. This should definitely enhance the experience of EVERY user. It should also encourage people to better their building and design concepts and apply some thought before even placing a block.

    Nice sct!

Thanks for your time and effort put into getting this server up. I am sure it is a massive undertaking and the cost alone has to be huge. Then to pour yourself into it day after day tweeking to fine tuning and make it run smooth.....we have a server and it isn't close to this size so I can't figure how you have time for anything else in your life. (smile)
Thanks again for a job well done!

I was just about to put down my first waterstrainer too...
Ah well, time for something else.

Great update. Just a quick question. Since the server isn't two weeks old yet will those who have been playing the past week have an opportunity to apply early?

    Yes.

Nice update its going to improve a lot of peoples experiences with the server and i love the engineer rank hopefully ill be able to get it one day and one day become higher than that but for right now GREAT job on the server and ill be doing vidz on my channel so yeah KEEP IT UP!!!!!!
  9. I'm extremely happy about the chunk loader changes. I'm also pretty happy about the quarry and machine design changes.

What I am not happy with is banning block breakers completely. I think engineers should be allowed to use them in LIMITED numbers. As in, limit me to 5-10 block breakers total, not 50. There's some neat machines that need just 1-2 breakers in them to do a lot.

I agree with bricked block breakers are the only way to get decent amounts of scrap in my opinion and i only use 7 in total, and having engineers limited to a few would keep everyone happy and the server happy i think but thats just my opinion

Nice update, can't wait., this should teach people not to go overboard with everything :P, and also make peoples playing experiences a lot better as it may drastically decrease lag, and also increase the server tick, which may I say everyone has been complaining about being so low :P.

    Keep up the great work!

Fantastic! It's great to hear the tick rate will be positively affected by this. I agree that the amount of random quarries scattered throughout the map is ridiculous, so limiting those makes sense. I am a bit disappointed about the chunk loader blocks, as I was planning on implementing some of those tomorrow. But again..makes perfect sense. I am very happy to see the effort that you are putting in to this server... it really shows.
    Great update :)

I'm not quite sure I understand why Lava Buckets are being restricted to Engineers. Can someone explain that one to me? Everything else looks fantastic, will barely affect me at all.

Nice update you has there :3

Question, what will happen to already placed quarries? I assume they'll just stop working?

EDIT: I just read the OP again, ignore that question ;)
  15. Ryski Industrialist

Very nice looking update. Makes perfect sense. I'll probably be aplying for that engineer rank in a couple of weeks ;)
At first when people on the server said chunk loader blocks are being disabled I was like WHAT!? But I completely uderstand now. Looking forward to the performence being much nicer when the update happens.
To all the admins: Thank you so much for putting lots of work into letting us have fun. I absolutely love this server and I think you guys are doing a great job!

    All very good news!

Can I make a suggestion regarding quarries? On another server I used to play on that had BC/IC/RP we had a separate world specifically for quarries and generally any mining detrimental to the landscape. this meant you could basically feel free to wreck the terrain and sap as much out of it as you wish, leaving the normal world beautiful. The use of a special teleport pipe was then able to send items from the mining world to the main world.

The latter could be scrapped of course and we could be made to ferry items ourselves as a kind of natural "cap" on the amount that can be pulled out of that world at any time.

    just my two pence ;)
  17. Uses for block breakers that this affects :

    1. Automated production of scrap. THIS is what causes the lag, because the breakers do a repetitive task hundreds of thousands of times, eating a noticable fraction of server resources.

    2. Automated wheat/Flax production with bonemeal. These farms need only 1 breaker and do not cause appreciable lag because they are very small and simple.

    3. Production of snowballs by breaking snow from a snowman. In this application, the block breaker ban increases lag, because the only other way to produce snowballs in large quantities requires dozens and dozens of industrialcraft pumps and compressors. I suspect that 5 block breakers making snowballs create less lag than the equivalent 50-100 pumps and compressors and associated pipes.

    4. Redpower Treefarms. Again, these only need a few breakers, and are a quite clever use of block breakers.

    5. Redpower circuit breakers. An extremely clever use of block breakers to break and replace blutricity wire.

    6. And the number 1 reason : block breakers are a crucial part of the upcoming mod release : Redpower 2 Frames. Frames are incredibly neat mining machines that trundle across the landscape. If frames are released but I cannot play with them on this server, I will have to find a server that has sufficient cpu power and a low enough population cap to support them.

There are other uses that I am not aware of that are quite neat.

Suggestion : allow breakers with strict limits on their use, and require them to be supplied by admins and the design approved in advance. I've looked at and modified the code for these things myself, they are extremely efficient. It is the fact that they count the same as a player breaking a block, and you can easily have hundreds and hundreds of them serverwide breaking a block once every second that causes the lag.

Would you mind looking into adjusting geogen MK2 output? Or possibly try to find a way to reduce the cost of lavafabs?

Currently the math works out at followed-

    Mk2 = 20EU /t
    1x lava fab(full power) = 250EU

1x lava fab can power roughly 5.5 Mk2s.

20*5.5 = 110EU. I can't seem to think of ANY other use for a lava fab. So it essentially becomes a completely worthless item.

    Awesome changes btw!
    Thanks!

  19. D3N : you are asking for perpetual motion. Essentially, you want to fabricate lava from energy, then burn that lava and somehow release more energy. That doesn't make sense.

The reason lava fabricators exist is not to make free energy, it is to allow you to make an obsidian generator. You only pay 50k EU to make a block of lava, which is less than the cost of mass fabricating enough uu-matter to make the same obsidian.

Of course, for the obsidian generator to work, you need a block breaker...grr...

I am also confused about the lava buckets.
